Rotary International is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. It is the world's first service organization, founded in 1905 by Paul Harris in Chicago, now comprised of a global network of some 31, 000 clubs in more than 165 countries.
The Rotary Club of Orangevale, chartered in 1960, numbers 44 men and women representing a wide cross-section of local businesses and professions. The club meets weekly for fellowship, breakfast, and interesting programs dealing with subjects of local, regional, national, and international importance. Membership in the club is composed of adult persons of good character and good business or professional reputation.
Rotary solicits members by invitation from business and professional leaders of the community. Its strength lies in the following characteristics: the diversity of the businesses and professions represented in the club; an inclusive rather than an exclusive membership; members' acquaintance with other occupations; and fellowship based on diversity instead of similarity of interest.
In assessing candidates recommended for membership, the Rotary Board considers the following points: · Is the individual's character above reproach? · Is the reputation of the individual's firm exemplary? · Is the person service-minded? · Can the candidate meet the financial obligations of membership and attend the weekly meetings?
August is membership and extension month in Rotary International. However, members may be invited to join the club at any time. Shortly after a member is inducted, the Board schedules a Fireside (orientation) for the new member and spouse.
