The Rotary Club of Pocket/Greenhaven |
In October of 2006, three Rotarians with ties to the Laguna/Elk Grove Rotary Club decided to form a new Rotary Club in the Pocket/Greenhaven area of Sacramento, CA. Steve Kwartler, Vikki Bilstad and Don Luthringer began the effort to form a new Rotary Club in an area of Sacramento not served by a local Rotary Club. These Founders selected a meeting site, Aviator’s Restaurant at the Sacramento Executive Airport on Freeport Boulevard, and began the arduous journey of transforming an idea into a reality. |
Over the next eight months, this small group met on Thursday mornings and formed a cadre of charter members who gradually expanded through actions such as advertising, signage, personal contacts and business calls. A service area for this new club was defined as Sutterville Road to the North, Highway 99 to the East, Meadowview/Pocket Road to the South and the Sacramento River to the West. Efforts were focused on identifying prospective members in this area. |
With the assistance of District 5180 staff, other Rotary Club members and the hard work of the club’s new members, the Rotary goal of 20 prospective members was reached in April of 2007. An application for a Rotary Club Charter was approved and effective on May 11, 2007. A Charter Night celebration was planned and held on May 24, 2007 with Past Rotary International President, Cliff Dochterman, as the key speaker. |
The history of the Rotary Club of Pocket/Greenhaven may be relatively short, but its future prospects are quite bright! The club has members who are dedicated to service. The first year of this new club will be history making. |
